Manual Checks vs. Computer Checks
Looking to get some business checks but can't figure out whether you need manual checks or computer checks? There are so many different names being used for business checks that it can even get confusing for check printers. It seems that no two check manufacturers use the same naming conventions, so how are customers supposed to determine what will best suit their needs? You could always guess and end up with the wrong style checks! Well, you are here because you don't want to do that and waste your time and money. Let us get right to it.
At the highest level, we have checks and we can break that down into personal checks and business checks. Personal checks are for use with personal checking accounts and business checks are for use with business checking accounts. If you are running a business, you had better have a business checking account and be using business checks. It is not a wise idea to mix personal and business finances as this can have all sorts of legal and tax implications.
Business checks can further be broken down into manual checks and computer checks. This is where things begin to get confusing. Manual checks and computer checks can be referred by many other names. Let us start with manual checks which are often referred to as business checks, 3-on-a-page checks, 3-per-page checks, desktop checks, voucher checks, payroll checks, general disbursement checks, multi-purpose checks, pocket checks, compact checks, bank drafts, and a host of other names. See how this can get a bit out of hand?
Now we move on to computer checks which are often referred to as laser checks, inkjet checks, software compatible checks, continuous form checks, quickbooks checks, quicken checks, blank checks, blank check stock, peachtree checks, ms money checks, microsoft money checks, great plains checks, and a bunch of other names. Have you had enough yet?
Now the funny part is that the difference between manual business checks and computer checks basically comes down to if you want traditional checks that are already pre-printed for you and you fill them out by hand or if you want checks that you print yourself through a wide variety of accounting software packages. Both options will work and the decision really depends on your business and how you like to do things.
