If the check is made out to somebody else and they have signed it over to you. This is a third-party check and can be more difficult to cash. Money laundering is often handled this way. Will really depend on the bank you go to.
You will need to endorse (or sign) the back of the check. If you want cash, wait to endorse the back of the check at the bank. Otherwise, anybody can cash it if you drop it or lose it. If you want to deposit, you can write "For Deposit Only" on the back and then endorse ahead of time. This prevents somebody else from cashing.
If you have a bank account, it will be easiest to cash it there. If you do not, the next best it to try at the bank the check is drawn on. The bank name and address should appear on the front of the check. If none of these are options for you, it will either get complicated or expensive. Try cashing at a local grocery or department store (e.g. Wal-Mart). May be required to spend some portion at their store (e.g. 20%). Try cashing at a local check cashing store (e.g. Check 'n Go). Expect to pay a hefty percentage of the check amount to them. Try to sign over to friend or family member and have them cash.
