The one thing you will need to be aware of, especially if you plan to print your own checks, is that the background must be light enough for the automated scanning of checks to work. If the background is too dark, the machines will not be able to read the important information on your checks, such as the MICR line. Often customers would like their logo or background images to be darker or brighter but to do so would violate the accepted standards for check printing. So, while you can do some neat things with custom checks, be aware that the limitations may keep you from getting exactly what you would have liked.
We don't handle all of the customization options available today because we tend to stick to the 20% of options that serve 80% of our customers. This allows us to keep costs down and remain at peak efficiency; reducing errors and speeding up production time so you get your checks faster. For the vast majority of customers, custom checks are not really worth the extra cost. After all, they are just checks and the receiver only cares about the money not the paper it comes on.
