You probably already know how to write your own personal checks, but you might have a few questions about other aspects of this payment option.

How Do You Void a Check?
The obvious way to make a personal check void is to right the word "VOID" in big letters across the face of the document. However, you should also write Void on the signature line and in the box intended for the dollar amount.
Doing so will help to prevent someone from using the voided check to commit fraud. Tellers at the bank look these areas for irregularities when they are cashing and depositing personal checks. If they notice something suspicious they are more likely to refuse the check.
You should also make sure you use a gel pen when voiding a check. The ink from these types of pens becomes permanently engrained in the paper fibers making it harder to alter.
Why Would You Need to Void a Check?
There are quite a few reasons that you may be required to void a check.
Sometimes a voided check is needed to set up direct deposit from an employer or direct debit for a reoccurring bill or even something like a gym membership. Making an error such as writing the wrong date or dollar amount on the check is another reason to make it void.
When you order checks online you may also need to send a voided check. At Check Advantage this is how we typically ensure that people purchasing personal and business checks give us the correct routing and account information for the MICR line on their new checks.
Why Do I Have to Endorse Personal Checks?
When you write a check, you are essentially creating a contract between you and the person or organization you are paying.
The person writing the check signs it to indicate they legally agree to pay a certain amount. You need to endorse the check with your signature to legally proclaim that you are the person they intended to receive those funds.
Signing your name as it appears on the face of a personal check is called a blank endorsement. Be aware that after you endorse a check this way anyone may be able to cash it. If possible you should wait until you get to the bank to endorse all personal checks and business checks.
Can Someone Else Cash a Personal Check Made Out to Me?
It is possible to endorse personal checks and have them paid out to someone else without your presence at a bank, credit union or other check cashing location. But there is a specific way you'll need to endorse the check.
On the back of your personal check, first write "Pay to the Order Of" on the top line. On the second line, print the name of the person you want to receive the funds from that check. Underneath that you should write your own signature.
Finally, the person receiving the money will need to endorse the check themselves underneath your signature.
Do I Need to Order Personal Checks from My Bank?
Ordering personal checks from your personal bank may seem like the easiest solution when it's time to reorder checks, but it may not be the best decision.
Banks have to order their personal checks from printers and then they mark up the price to make a profit. It is perfectly acceptable to order personal checks from an online check printer like Check Advantage.
You could save as much as 75% off of what your bank would charge, and you'll also have the freedom to choose from a wide range of personal check styles!
