There is no need for some fancy check printer as you can print checks with almost any printer. However, you should seriously consider using magnetic ink if you're going to print your own checks from scratch. You should also use special paper for check printing that includes security features that makes it difficult to alter your printed checks. Be wary of software vendors who oversimplify the process and claim you can print your own checks without magnetic ink. One of the most accessible programs for printing your own checks is VersaCheck. You can find VersaCheck online or at various office retailers.
The entire check doesn't need magnetic ink, only the bank information like your routing and account numbers. These are the funny looking numbers and symbols along the bottom of a check, also known as the MICR line. If you had these numbers preprinted on the check stock and you're only printing payee information, you do not need magnetic ink. However, you can print the entire check with magnetic toner if it is more convenient for you. It will simply be a bit more expensive.
Computers with magnetic readers read the account information off these checks to speed processing. While we are slowly moving towards optical readers, you are still likely to have your checks run through non-optical readers. If you print your own checks without magnetic ink, you run the risk that the checks will pass through a non-optical reader and have to be processed manually. Manual check processing can result in a fee for you and/or your payee, as well as slower payments.
