Why You Deserve the Right to Write Personal Checks
There are plenty of people who complain about those who use personal checks. For some reason, there are certain people who feel inconvenienced by those who choose to pay this way.
But there are just as many if not more people who use personal checks every day and want to be able to continue using them. The Federal Reserve estimates more than 33 billion checks are written each year. Yet for some reason, more and more businesses are opting to stop accepting checks.
Those business may regret that decision, because they could be angering very valuable customers like you.
You probably haven't heard many people say the wish more businesses would accept personal checks - but that's exactly what a new Ipsos Poll indicates.
The survey - which was commissioned by major check manufacturer Deluxe - questioned more than one-thousand people on if they believed they were being forced to stop using checks as a payment option.
75% of the people who participated in the study told Ipsos they deserve the right to be able to choose their payment option when making a purchase from a retailer no matter what it is. These people felt all businesses should find a way to accept credit, debit, cash and checks. Sixty percent felt the same way about restaurants.
Nearly 50% of those questioned said they would react negatively to a business that refused to accept their personal checks.
Customer service is another factor that businesses should consider - and the public says accepting checks should be part of good customer service. One out of five survey takers told Ipsos refusing personal checks is a sign of poor customer service.
Forcing customers to stop using checks can also hurt local economies.
Every time you use a credit card, the business you frequent has to pay interchange fees to the credit card companies. Not only does that make the price of goods and services go up for consumers, it also makes it harder for small businesses in your community to survive. They can't negotiate with credit card companies like major corporations such as Wal-Mart or Target.
It's estimated that interchange fees cost each Americans around $427 a year. That adds up to around $50 billion dollars toward those fees annually!
The Ipsos survey found 61% of people said they be more likely to order checks and pay with them once they learned that using them would mean more money would go toward their local economy.
More businesses would be wise to take the Sorry No Checks Accepted sign down out of their windows. It would mean happier customers and make much better business sense.
