Interested in human forms, rather than the more mechanical industrial design style of drawing, Cleveland based artist Derek Hess has been churning out amazing poster art since 1987. ''I started booking underground rock concerts at a bar in Cleveland called The Euclid Tavern. I drew my own flyers to promote the shows, which blended my interests in art and rock perfectly. The flyers really go around, I guess, because after I started printing big color versions of them in 1994, Newsweek magazine featured me, along with two other artists, in a story on new poster artists.'' Since then he's had his work appear on a slew of album and magazine covers plush had his work displayed in many galleries across the USA and abroad. At the age of 14, he moved to the United States and settled in Austin Texas. Credited with single handedly reviving the lost art of the concert poster Frank's creative career grew largely out of his enthusiasm for Austin's growing underground rock scene in the mid-eighties. Starting with black and white flyers for friends bands posted on telephone polls his reputation grew as a artist who's work was graphically compelling as well as culturally gripping. With hundreds of full color limited edition silk screened posters under his belt for such renowned artists as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beastie Boys he has also been the subject of many magazine articles such as Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Spin, and Details. Not limited to the rock world Frank has also done work for Nike, BASF, Slim Jim and MTV. His newest venture, Man's Ruin, is a fully blown graphic production and record label, which is firmly dedicated to producing the ultimate in collectible vinyl and show posters. From swingers' pads to supervillains' hideouts, from the South of France to the North of Africa, hipsters everywhere seem to be talking about Shag. A commercial illustrator since 1987, Shag (a.k.a. Josh Agle) has only been painting actual pieces for consumption by the public since 1995. Almost everything previous to that was commercial art in a variety of styles, most of them recreations of past commercial art styles (sci-fi pulp art, sixties clip art, etc.). When asked how he settled on his current style, he replies, Because it was easy. I didn't have to worry about shading and proportion. Nevertheless, Shag's easy paintings have been shown all over the US, Europe and Australia.
