Void Check
To void a check means to make the financial instrument have no legal force or effect; not legally binding or enforceable. Basically it makes it useless and it will not be accepted in exchange for money. Two common reasons for wanting to void a check. The first is making a mistake, such as incorrect amount or name, when filling out a check. Note that you can make corrections and simply initial the changes. If you choose not to, it would probably be wise to shred instead of just voiding the check. The second is having to provide your bank account information to set up automatic withdrawl or direct deposit.

It is a best practice to write "VOID" in large letters covering the entire face of the check. To increase your protection, consider adding void to the following areas: amount box, signature line, and back of the check. Don't forget to enter the voided check into your checkbook register. You can always request your bank put a stop payment on the check if you are really concerned. The bank will likely charge you a fee and this will typically last for six months. Be sure to shred the voided check to keep your account numbers out of thieves hands. You do not need to let your bank know.
If you are a ballpoint pen lover, at least switch to black ink. Among water-based inks, gels are the most impervious and the only type of ink that has been shown to be counterfeit proof to acetone or other chemicals used in "check washing." Most ballpoint and marker inks are dye based, meaning that the pigments are dissolved in the ink. Based on recent ink security studies, we highly recommend that you use a gel pen, such as the Uniball 207, which uses gel ink that contains tiny particles of color that are trapped into the paper, making check washing a lot more difficult.
