Voided Check
A voided check is a check written or partially written but then canceled or deleted by the maker of the check. The notation of "void" is used because checks are prenumbered for control purposes and every check needs to be accounted for. Voiding a check is a pretty simple matter. You merely write "VOID" on the check in letters large enough to make your intent clear. You can write it on the payee line or write it on a diagonal across the check. Leave the check unsigned. Remember to list the check number as voided in your check register.

I would like direct deposit of my paycheck into my checking account. The form from work says I need to attach a voided personal check but I have no idea what that is. They would like a check that you write VOID on. The reason is they need your bank's routing number as well as your account number. These are the numbers that are encoded on the bottom of your check, between symbols. Both are on your check along with other information (sometimes your check serial number) and there is less chance for error if they take it directly from your check rather than having you write it down or give it to them verbally. By writing void on the check, it cannot be used or forged.
If you do not have checks, you can go to your bank and request a counter check and they can make one for you. If they won't give you a counter check, ask for an "encoded deposit slip" for your checking account. Make sure it has the "Routing/Transit" number as well as your checking account number. If you explain you need it for direct deposit, they should be able to create you one with your checking account number on it, as long as it is voided. Go to the bank service desk rather than a teller. They have the printers that can encode the needed numbers on the bottom of the check.
