Since 1952, a non-profit organization has been dedicated to promoting what it calls the paper-based payment system. Of course, that system includes the personal and business checks you order from places like Check Advantage.
The Check Payment Systems Association (CPSA) has the mission of providing leadership as well as services and programs designed to advance checks as a payment option. The organization is committed to making sure checks are as secure and convenient as possible.
The CPSA and Check Advantage firmly believe that personal checks have long-term value in our society. The organization not only assists manufacturers and printers of checks like Check Advantage, it also works with businesses and financial institutions that deal with paper checks on a regular basis, and even companies that produce products like MICR ink or check printing software.
Check security and deterring check fraud make up the CPSA's most recognizable work.
In 1994, it developed a set of voluntary guidelines meant to fight the production of counterfeit checks. The majority of check printing companies in North America now follow these guidelines, which keep counterfeiters from using a computer scanner, laser printer or photocopier to create fake checks.
The Padlock Icon may be the biggest contribution the CPSA has made to the check industry. The small symbol of a padlock appears on all business checks and personal checks that have at least three enhanced security features. You'll find the icon on both the front and back of your checks.
This icon lets anyone accepting checks know that additional security measures were added to the design of the check during production. These features make your checks more complex, which makes it much more difficult for a criminal to create duplicates of your personal checks.
The CPSA Authorizes use of the Padlock Icon and only authorized users such as Check Advantage can legally print the symbol on their checks. You can view the list of authorized users on the CPSA's website. Visit our Security Features page to learn more about how Check Advantage makes sure your checks are safe to use.
Besides working diligently to prevent check fraud, the CPSA works with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to address other issues surrounding checks. In addition, the CPSA conducts research to assist its members with the development of products and services in response to market demand.
The Check Payment Systems Association also represents the check industry in Washington, D.C. It gets involved with legislation and political debates on issues like identity fraud and check printing procedures. The organization provides its analysis to lawmakers to keep them informed about the importance of checks as a way to pay in America.
The CPSA's work not only affects companies like Check Advantage. Its mission is just as important to consumers like you.
