Your social security number and/or driver's license number should never be printed on your checks.
If identity thieves get this information they can use it to gain access to your bank account, credit accounts and other personal information.
Before 2005, some states may have actually used your social security number or SSN as your driver's license number. States are no longer allowed to do so, however, you may need to ask the DMV to change your ID if it is still your SSN.
Some merchants may ask you to write your SSN or drivers license number on your check. Don't do so unless it is absolutely necessary. If anyone ever asks for you to submit your social security number, you should know why they need it, how they plan to use, and what will happen if you don't give them your SSN.
It's also wise to keep any other unnecessary private information off of your personal checks. If you don't want someone else to get their hands on it, don't have it printed on your checks!
