Write A Check
Fill out your checks using pen, never pencil. Make everything legible, never scribbled. If your checkbook comes with carbon copies behind each check, be sure to use the plastic divider each time you write, or you will ruin other check copies below.

1. Fill out the date. You can use any format as long as you include the month, day, and year. The "date" box is usually in the upper right corner of the check.
2. Fill out the person's name. This is written on the top line of the two long lines running the width of the check. It should be labeled either "pay to the order of" or "payable to."
3. Fill in the numerical box using only numbers and a decimal. This small box will start with a dollar sign. Simply fill it in with the amount of your check, such as 10.00.
4. Fill in the same amount using only words. This will go on the long line directly underneath the line with the person's name. Write the whole dollar amount in words followed by the cents over 100 and a line to fill up any remaining space. For example, ten and 00/100--------.
5. Write a note on the "memo" line, located in the lower left corner, to signify what the check is for (such as "rent" or "groceries").
6. Sign the check, do not print your name. The signature line is usually in the lower right corner of the check.
7. Write down the check number, date, payee, and amount in your register. Do this before you forget as it will aide you in balancing your checkbook later.
