Pony Up!

Each year on the last Wednesday in July, the wild pony herds that inhabit the Atlantic coastal island of Assateague are thinned for resource management purposes during an event called the Chincoteague Wild Pony Swim.

At low tide, approximately 150-175 adult ponies and foals are swum across the Assateague channel to Chincoteague Island, where surplus animals are sold at auction. It's a Virginia tradition that started in 1924 and now attracts up to 40,000 spectators. Ponies that aren't sold are swum back to the island a few days later.
