Long before the first helicopter ever lifted off into the sky, artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci is credited with sketching the earliest design.

His creative concept was described as an aerial screw. It was a funny contraption that scientists now say would never really have been able to fly. But it was da Vinci's first draft that led to the modern helicopter.
