Haro Kiti!  Here kitty kitty.  Here kitty kitty.  Hello Kitty!  Hello Kitty is one of the best-known of many simply drawn fictional characters produced by the Japanese company Sanrio.  The first product, a vinyl coin purse, was introduced in the United States in 1976.  The Hello Kitty line has since developed licensing arrangements worth more than $1 billion a year in sales.  Rather astonishing, don't you think?  The line includes everything from dolls to stickers and greeting cards to clothes, accessories, school supplies, dishes and home appliances to the official theme park of Sanrio featuring Hello Kitty and her friends.  I am sorry, but I don't get the appeal.  What am I missing?

In 1999, in Hong Kong, a brutal murder known as the Hello Kitty murder took place. The popular name of the case derives from the fact that the murderer inserted his victim's head into a Hello Kitty doll after decapitating her.  That is just horrific.  Must have sent the Sanrio public relations people into a frenzy.  As of August 2007, Thai police officers who have committed minor transgressions such as showing up late or parking in the wrong place will be forced to wear Hello Kitty armbands for several days as penance.  Apparently not everyone is madly in love with Hello Kitty.

"Small gift, big smile."  That is what Sanrio is all about and the foundation of everything they do, and they're proud to say they've been creating smiles for over 40 years.  So, I guess owning Kello Kitty checks is a way to get yourself to smile each time you give away your hard-earned money?  Now this is all starting to make some sense.  You give the gift of your money and you get to smile for doing so.  How sweet is that?  Would you be willing to write me a check?  That way we both get to smile!
