The Story of Stingy Jack

This is the legend behind the tradition of carving pumpkins at Halloween. It all goes back to a scheming farmer by the name of Stingy Jack.

Jack liked to drink a little too much; he stole from his neighbors and caused all kinds of mischief. That's why one night; the Devil came to claim Jack's soul.

But the Devil underestimated Jack's deviousness and found himself trapped in a tree surrounded by crosses. Jack made the Devil promise never to take his soul to hell. But when old Jack passed away, his sinful life kept from entering heaven as well.

Forced to wander the earth for eternity, Jack carved out a turnip and made a lantern using an ember from the underworld, which the Devil gave to him.
