The red-tailed hawk is an extremely versatile bird. You can find it all across the Western hemisphere - from Alaska down to Panama. It lives in the wilderness, and also easily adapts to urban settings.

One of the most famous metropolitan hawks is Pale Male who chose to call New York City's Central Park his home. Pale Male and his mates have raised chicks, which have also returned to live near the park.

In 2004, an attempt to remove the hawk's nest was met with protests and public outcry. Pale Male's supporters made sure a new nesting site was in place and he continues to return to his Fifth Avenue home.
