One Tough President

Most of us know that Theodore Roosevelt was a tenacious man. But have you ever heard the story of when Teddy got shot?

Roosevelt was campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1912 when a man shot him in the chest at close range. The bullet was slowed by his thick, wool coat, an eyeglass case and the former president's 50 page speech. The shot did, however, pierce through a muscle and crack a rib.

Still, that was not enough to stop Roosevelt. He went on to deliver his 90 minute speech while bleeding from his wound.

These unique checks feature quotations from the great American alongside images of his statue. The bronze likeness can be found at Theodore Roosevelt Island on the Potomac River. Coincidentally, that's where Roosevelt used to go skinny dipping...in the middle of winter!
