The Tredegar Iron Works

Unless you're a student of the American Civil War or a resident of Richmond, Virginia, you probably haven't heard of the Tredegar Iron Works.

As the largest facility of its kind in the south, Tredegar supplied most of the munitions used by the Confederates during the war. In fact, its location was one reason for moving the Confederate capital from Montgomery, Alabama, to Richmond in 1861.

Fortunately, when Richmond burned in 1865, the Tredegar Iron Works did not fall with the rest of the city. That's because its owner, Joseph Reid Anderson, paid more than 50 armed guards to protect the facility from arsonists that fateful April night.

After the war, Tredegar resumed full operations, turning out hundreds of thousands of decorative railings, fences and gates like those depicted on our Wrought Iron Fence Side Tear Checks. Personalize a set for yourself today!
